Celtic Knotwork
Knotwork is an ancient art form for the Celts, taught to us by the land, hidden in the roots of trees and carved into stones. Knotwork is an ancient tradition passed down to each generation, the never ending ribbon meant to teach us of the cyclical nature of life, the bonds of trust, and the returning to roots.
Pìos Ealain meaning Piece of Art in Scottish Gaelic
Pìos Ealain was established in 2017 at the forefront of my journey in reconnecting with my Celtic and Scottish ancestry. At their core these pieces are created through stories, culture, memories and history, creating doorways to my language and my heritage.
Traditional Materials
All my traditional materials are sustainably sourced supporting Highland Crofters or local Indigenous businesses. I explore a number of animal based materials that have been used by Celtic people for thousands of years including leathers from sheep, deer, reindeer and seals. It is a long standing value among crofters that you use every part of the animal, it is not taken in abundance or for indulgence. I only use materials sourced from those that share my value of sustainability.
